Days 1,2 Cough, Cough, Cough, Cough
Does your chest hurt, feeling rough?
No, I’m fine, dear, Cough,Cough,
Cough, Cough, Cough, Cough
Cough, Cough, Cough, Cough.
Day 3 I do feel tired today, a little cold,
but no, not feverish, no chill,
not really ill,
just feel as if I’m getting old!
Cough, Cough, Cough, Cough
Cough, Cough, Cough, Cough
Day 4 Check it out, gone long enough
see the doctor, dress up snug,
wrapped up in a soft knee-rug,
furry hat (may muzz your hair),
gloves and mack:
out quickly in the chair,
(Now, how will he reach
his stethoscope down your chest and back?)
Undo and loosen, then repack,
all while sitting comfy, cosy.
Then wheel back out through all those doors
– can you cope?
– so kind of you to help,
– so kind of you to help,
– so kind of you to help,
and up the slope
to the chemist, then the car
and on to the Day Centre,
(which isn’t very far),
transfer to the chair to trundle in
take the indoor zimmer bundle in
with its hanging bag of useful muddle,
from which the expert can extract,
catch by feel deep from its middle
a sweet or watch, a purse, compact,
tissues, glasses, lipsyl, book,
nail file, comb – by touch, not look –
medication, letter, and sun-shades,
spare boxes for the hearing aids …
the day’s essential puddle.
Did we climb Mt Everest this morning?

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
Sounds like a routine day for you with your mother-in-law. I hope she is getting better from her cough. I have a bad one too, so can sympathise with both you and her.

An Everest to her when
An Everest to her when everything is a struggle.

I don't know why, because
I don't know why, because this is lovely, but it brought a tear. Sounds jolly exhausting, but that's real life. Sometimes, getting through the day feels like a great achievement.

I could so identify with this
I could so identify with this, Rhiannon. Going anywhere with my husband these days, with his Parkinson's and confusion, is a real challenge. Just getting out of the back door to the car certainly feels like climbing Everest to me, most days.
Not only that but I have a cough and a cold which started on Christmas Eve. It's slightly better now, but it is seeming to drag its heels.
Really enjoyed your poem...made me not feel quite as alone
Tina
