Singing

To the man who told me 
my singing is pretty,
my mom tells me 
it’s always flat 
and I should stick to writing music
but she ridicules my writing, too.
The first song I memorized 
was Part of Your World.
I love humming
(it helps me concentrate).
Nobody would talk to me 
when I was little
so I serenaded myself on the playground
because the teachers get upset
when you talk to yourself.
People always get angry 
because I’m too loud and
the pitch of my voice is too high.
I say latte as though it rhymes with ‘bought a’. 
Singing keeps me sane at the expense
of everybody else’s sanity.
