June...

Cherry

Waters the nasturtiums – clambering, climbing – 
craving freedom from the willow-weave
of hanging-baskets
 
and there – upon the lawn, a Cinnabar moth
of cherry red – so delicately painted; triangles
and tiny dots of brownish-grey...
 
It trembles on the rich, green sward...unsure 
as to which direction next...each quiver –
a panted breath. 
 
She bends down – gently cups it in her hands;
starts to run inside – show off
her find.  Until...
 
she remembers; ‘old habits sure do die hard’, 
and loneliness hangs in the air like a bulging backpack –
heavy on her shoulders.
 
Spreads wide her hands...Would that she could
gaze on it forever like the rosy cheeks
of a child
 
yet in the blink of an eye she follows its thin, 
crimson line become as one with the sky and with whatever 
lies beyond... maybe 
 
to come to rest by a fountain – sheds diamonds –
sit, silent, on red tulips in the gardens
of Versailles.

yeah this is really beautiful and intricately put together...subtle attention to detail everywhere... from the initial c rattle of 'clambering, climbing – /craving', 'delicately', 'trembles' and 'quiver' dropped throughout, but it was these two lines (for me) - 'Would that she could/gaze on it forever like the rosy cheeks/of a child' and 'she follows its thin, /crimson line become as one with the sky and with whatever /lies beyond' that had it unfolding gradually into something deeper and more elegiac, lifts it someplace else. this is done to great effect, like a little crescendo. wonderful poem. :-)
