Loose Ends

Strange how it's fine to say hello
but when the moment comes
to end the call, all of a sudden,
goodbye is not enough,
but it's all we have -
We can hear each other thinking
something - you say it first, no you...
elusive unsaids -
So, I'd better go - lovely
speaking - to hear you - and you...
Bye then...
Bye!
End.

I think you are picking many
I think you are picking many words from my head right now. I'm not sure how you are doing it. Do you have a spy camera in there?
This is a sweet poem and so true

It's even more difficult if
It's even more difficult if you're talking to someone who seems to feel an obligation to continue, and doesn't pick up on the hints that you feel that you need to go, but you don't want to lie about a committment, but you can't really say, 'I've really talked enough and I'm tired …', well maybe you could to some friends. 'Sorry, really have to go, speak soon!' Rhiannon

Hi Bee
Hi Bee
I'm not a telephone person, so I'm the one ending the call, sooner rather than later. But I think your poem is about more than phone calls. I will always remember when Philip was told that he needed to have his heart stopped and restarted - this was seven weeks before he died. He had a racing pulse and his heart was really out of control. We both knew that his condition was so fragile that they might have a problem restarting it. He told me he wanted me to go into the hallway during the procedure, When I left the room, he said a few words, and we both knew they might be our last words to each other. Then I sat outside listening as the machine made its characteristic banging noise, and again, and again. Finally the nurse came out and told me it was over and I could go back. His first words after coming back to life, although he never remembered it afterwards were, "third time lucky."

There's such a reality about
There's such a reality about this poem Bee, those feelings of hesitation when each person pauses, not quite sure of whether to say goodbye, until finally someone takes a stand and ends the call. It can get quite exhausting. My son can talk for hours on his phone, don't know how he does it.
A natural read that everyone can relate to.
Jenny.

It's so true ...the polite
It's so true ...the polite niceties seem to come out of us and we want to be the last one to say goodbye. It's a lovely and most observant poem :)
