Pawn Shop

Well I pawned the earrings that you gave me
and I almost cried as I let them go
You know I don’t mind living on bread and water
but I’ve got to get places and it takes money to go

I’ve got my children through education
and they both have nice things
because I sold my nice clothes too
and your engagement ring

I don’t really like my job
but at least it pays the bills
sometimes we can’t afford the shopping
but my children’s stomachs are always filled

I can’t take them on holiday like I want to
my wage hardly covers the rent
what help is there for a single parent
when the people in charge are bent

So I pawned the earrings that you gave me,
but that’s what happens when you’re on your own
you don’t really need nice things
and it’s easy to let them go
