Elegy for Eve

Autumn drags its heels. Summer – 
was a no-show – an utter travesty, this year;
presently – way too late for it to make amends,
it prepares to slope on back behind the ridge.
 
Piebald tree-trunks drift in shadows
along with smoke from some or other bonfire...
Granny Smiths sob out their hearts in the orchard
where they fell, prey to hornets and wasps
 
and the last of the Black-Eyed Susans, hang 
their heads in soggy shame, along with
summer-squash...gone to pulp
where they lay. 
 
Paint peels from blinded eyes of leaky beach-huts, 
and in the shallows, boats of red, and green, 
list, aimlessly, amongst the reeds in peignoirs
of silken-silver mist.
 
A hammock – its allegiance torn between two trees,
sags, forlorn...mourns the fact that, never again,
will it get to hold her...brown-skinned – perusing
a favourite book – eyes, all flying fish
and shooting stars
 
and martins in the eaves of the barn are flown,
as I wait, impatiently, for deer to leave their cloven,
pearly tracks in morning frost, and only today,
I saw swans tilt toward the south.
 
Time was, I would have longed to go with them, 
to the other side of winter, but now I’m content
to remain...follow tried and tested paths,
with unchallenged boundaries.
 
These frowning, brown corduroy hills...
missives intent on inspiring this time of the year – speak 
in a thousand tongues to all who would hear...
 
tardy ochre leaves – whispered vespers 
calling them down, and  ambergris needles 
of an aged Scots pine, to fall away, soft
as the sotto voce of an elegy for Eve,
played in the key of me
minus she...

So, so beautiful. And such a wonderful testament to your daughter. Your words capturing beauty lost and still existing I like that you included 'but now I'm content to remain'. I'm amazed that your skill with words and imagery just continues to get better and better.

Some beautiful autumal images again, and some can be so cheering, even the fresh ploughed fields as you say. Mixed in with the autumnal images of life and loss and memory and perseverance. Rhiannon
