Dear Rosalind,

We are now starting a very important time for the Burmese people – the Festival of Lights which starts today and goes on till 30 October. It is the Buddhist Lent.

Although you already will have seen it, and your project is no doubt well and truly
finished, I have copied out the exact wording of the Burma Act.

Be it enacted by the King’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:- PART I. INTRODUCTORY 1. This Act may be cited as the Government of Burma Act, 1935. 2. (1) All rights, authority and jurisdiction previously belonging to His Majesty the King, Emperor of India, which appertain or are incidental to the government of the territories in Burma for the time being vested in him and all rights, authority and jurisdiction exercisable by him by treaty,
grant, usage, sufferance or otherwise in, or in relation to, any other territories in Burma, are exercisable by His Majesty, except in so far as may be otherwise provided by or under this Act, or as may be otherwise directed by His Majesty. (2) The said rights, authority
and jurisdiction shall include any rights, authority or jurisdiction heretofore exercisable in relation to any territories in Burma by the Secretary of State, the Secretary of State in Council, the Governor-General of India, the Governor-General of Indian in Council, the Governor of Burma or the Local Government of Burma, whether by delegation from His Majesty or otherwise."

We have very important company this weekend, Resident Commissioner Philip Christopher Fogarty. He is here for tea, dinner and staying the night. He was just appointed the Commissioner of the Federation. Your mother is busy trying to make everything perfect, as I am sure it will be.

I didn't realise the festival of lights went on for three months, that's a long time for a festival.

Imagine having the Resident Commissioner Phillip Christopher Fogarty to stay the night, he sounds so important, they must have been very honoured.

I learnt some more today Jean.

I do get lost in legal language, despite reading and rereading, I still can't really make out what it's saying, though I presume it is to do with the separation of Burma from India, but Burma still governed from Britain? Rhiannon

i write letters to one of my grandchildren from time to time, usually a poem about birds...

so this I feel is charming and informative... perhaps a clever girl.

The writer was my husban's great aunt - long since dead, but I inherited her letters and diary, which are the basis of this set of writing - although much of it is with the help of the internet.
