A daisy for your love

It was a daisy by the road
Pretty and yellow in the sun
He stopped the car
and got out
and picked it
Then to my surprise
Ate it
Declaring he loved me
Funny way to show it
I laughed
But his fortune, he said,
had told him to eat a daisy
for his love
Odd fortune
For sure, he smiled
It was the summer of '74
and all was
youth and love
and big emotions
Kisses at red light stops
Hugs anywhere
And eyes only for each other
Beach days
Movie nights
Long extended partings
Forty-two years since that summer
Forty two years you are my love
Maybe there was something to that
fortune after all...
I look out on the day
And see a daisy in the sun
It bows in the wind
But maybe it is acknowledging
My thanks
