The Day

The sun rose, gradually lighting the sky, another day. The sparrows argued and shouted in the guttering, the blackbird had already announced the birth of another day. Light filtered in through the blinds, leaving patterns on plain, tastefully decorated walls. Eyes reluctant to open and allow what was to happen today.
This was the day, the day that would be the beginning.
Shower, hair washed, body anointed with sweet smelling lotions. Clothes, carefully chosen for such a special day, not just another day.
Breakfast, something memorable. Strawberries picked, still smelling of the sun that had given them life. Cream, white and pure. Toast, cooked to the ideal hue, butter melted and absorbed. Honey, just enough, sweetness and nature combined. Coffee to complete, black and strong, a stimulant needed for this significant day.
Dishwasher stacked, work surfaces cleaned. All in order, nothing to mar this day, this remarkable day.
A last look to ensure that all was as it should be, that no blame could be laid.
The envelope leant against the photo frame, Venetian glass chosen to complement such a unique image. She smiled, kissed the tip of her finger and gently laid it on the glass. That was a day to remember. Today the end, or was it another beginning?
Putting off the moment when she would leave she picked up the envelope. A name written in a beautiful flowing script, a cross denoting a kiss. The envelope as yet unsealed, its contents withdrawn and she began to read. Few words, she could not explain, just sorry. Nestled into the bottom a ring, a plain, golden ring, much worn. Closing her eyes, she remembered the day.
Bright sunshine, a bouquet of pink roses, a beautiful lace dress and him. She thought it was all she had ever wanted, the day that changed her life, and it did for a while. ‘Love, honour, cherish,’ it had seemed so easy. But then SHE had come along and everything had changed.
Sealing the envelope, leaving traces of her perfume, and replaced it leaning against that very special photograph.
One last look. Picking up her suitcase she opened the front door, its stained glass image of a perfect sunset making her smile.
This day, this magical day, the beginning of a life she had always denied. SHE would be waiting and they would begin their life together

That was not expected. I totally saw that going in a different direction. As Insert commented, nice twist, and a job well done.
