Once, a long time ago, a black prince named Prince Luno and a white princess named Princess Solaya fell in love but the father of the white princess refused to let the black prince marry his daughter.
"When the moon marries the sun", he said, "That is when I'll let that blackamoor marry my beloved child".
And, ontop of that, he threatened that if he ever caught the black prince anywhere near his palace he would have his heart put out with a skewer.
But the black prince could not bear to be apart from the white princess and so, putting on the makeup of a white faced clown; wearing a clowns colourful garb and carrying a lute the black prince got a job as a jester within the royal court.
By day, he would amuse and entertain the king and queen with witty jokes and juggling and acrobatics and, at night, he would steal into the Princess's room to be with her.
But the kings old court jester who had lost his job to the prince was very jealous and was desperate to do anything that would get him into trouble and he, hiding in the princes room saw him take off his make up and, discovering his true identity, ran immediately to the king to tell him how the black prince had tricked him.
And when the king was told, he ordered his guards to arrest the black prince and sentenced him to be executed.
Weeping and wailing, the white princess begged her father to spare the black prince, pleading, "Is there nothing that could change your heart?".
"When the moon marries the sun", he said, "Is when I said I would let you marry the black prince and I meant it".
And so, because she could not soften her fathers heart, she went and she prayed to her white gods and she also prayed to the black gods of the man she loved, putting them side by side and saying that she could not believe in any god of hate but would believe that any god was true who would spare Prince Luno's life and grant them the right to love.
And the next day the black prince was led out to be executed and the executioner drew forth a long skewer that was to pierce his heart.
But the princess ran forwards and threw her arms around the black prince saying, "If he is to die then I will die with him and then atleast by the piercing blade our two hearts shall be pinned together".
"Please", begged the kings own wife of the king, fearing that her daughter would be killed, "Will you not soften your heart for the sake of your own daughter?".
But the king was too proud, too stubborn and too hateful to change his heart and so he repeated the same words he had spoken twice before.
"When the moon marries the sun", he said, "That is when I'll let the black prince marry my daughter".
But then, just as the executioner was about pierce the prince and princess both with his skewer, suddenly the sky went black and everyone who looked up, with gasps and gaping mouths, saw the moon cover the sun so that all that could be seen was the edge of the sun around the moon like a golden wedding ring.
"Look", said the kings wife, pointing to the sky, "It is just as you said. The moon is marrying the sun".
Ofcourse it was just a solar eclipse but in those days such events were seen as magical things; the work of the gods and, because the king had sworn not just once but three times that, if the moon married the sun he would allow the black prince and his daughter to wed, he had no choice but to consent to their marriage.
And so they were married; the princess wearing a beautiful wedding gown of both black and white and blackbirds aswell as doves let loose into the air and, afterwards they lived happily ever after.
