He stands broadly beaming
by the ruins of his house
that Irma broke to smithereens
and when asked why the smile,
he laughs. I am still alive, he says,
the world hasn’t come to an end,
and that makes me happy, my friend.

So much respect goes out to

So much respect goes out to anyone who can still smile in the face of adversary, such as hurricane Irma.
Your poem brings to life the importance of at least still being alive and that's a blessing. I just hope many of these people are able to get their lives back. It's so sad to loose everything you've worked hard for all your life.
Glad you shared this piece of writing Luigi, makes you realize how lucky you are to still have a roof over your head.
Jenny. xx
