Aunties & Uncles

Aunties are strange,
giant women;
bosomy mob bosses,
it seems to me;
Matriarchs of
tribal broods;
their social gatherings
like summits between nations.

Uncles, dim creatures
that hide away behind them;
who light up most in the company of kids
but who, unless nudged to speak
by the huge elbow of an auntie
would sooner retreat
to their own quiet worlds.
