Theory: The heart of racism is aspiration

You have a choice about who to blame for your poverty.
a) Rich people with power, most of whom are white
b) Other people on the same economic level as you who are non-white or foreign in some way.
Who do you blame for your problems?
Could it be the people with the power or the people who are as powerless as you?
Well, its probably the mostly white rich people who are to blame
but
you don't want to blame them.
Why?
Because you want to BE them.
And if you start attacking the rich white people then you or your children being part of that fabulous ruling class will never come true.
Better to get rid of some other poor people we don't associate with even though they have more in common with us than the people at the top.
Better to say, its not the tight fisted rich white people who are sucking up all the nations wealth to support their millionaire lifestyles but the other people who are not rich that are a drain upon the nations resources.
Better to drown some of the people who are in the same boat as us rather than sink the big ship upon which all the millionaires are sailing.
Thats why, at the heart of racism is aspiration; why bigots hate poor refugees but love the Queen. We never hate the people we aspire to be.

I agree, this is clever. And
I agree, this is clever. And how many of us, from whichever country or background, once we got onto the millionaire's boat would care less about the little boats, that moment of panic and survival gone? I wonder who the Queen aspires to be. Probably someone with choices who who doesn't have to go round shaking hands with people.
