The old folks fear the foreigners
as they anxiously eye their table.
I don’t blame them.
Have you tried being old and poor?
What will we take from them next?

I should have arrived earlier,
before the church kicked-out.

The camarera doesn’t seem to mind:
always a ready smile and genuine warmth,
she fills my tray and glances toward a table in the corner;
she’ll bring the tostada once she’s cleared the queue.

The young woman I recognise from weekdays
looks around, slips off her coat
and squeezes into a space beside the fridge.

The owner had three cafes, all within a couple of blocks,
but this is the last – a shame for the Sunday regulars.

This week I noticed my old haunt on Alcalá has closed.
I hadn’t been in there for months.
Now it’s darkened and shuttered.
People move on.
Everything changes.
The old folks notice that more.

"Have you tried being old and
"Have you tried being old and poor?" I like that this seems offered as an option as if in the menu of life. Not recommended and you can't change your mind once it's infront of you.
