On Leaving Home

I think of the clocks
that tick for no one
and the toaster
still giving off heat
I think of the guitar my son plays
strings reverberating
warmly through empty air
since his incessant practice of
Wish You Were Here
and puzzle on who the eyes
in photographs follow now
that we’re not there
I think of our daily diaspora
out the door beyond the gate
each on our own
in the places where we go
and I wonder what ghosts
we’ll bring home

I like this very much, very strong idea of sudden space when everyone leaves, all signs of life - sound, warmth etc fading away. And the memories of life outside coming with you when you get back. Almost like a tide coming in going out

You have caught here the feeling of looking down on your life and family's ways when far apart, and the place you've just left, like if one could see a film catching each on their travels. It reminded me of one of my children (when very young) perplexing on what happened in the shops when we had left, and the idea he was told that they shut and the assistants left for their own homes! HIs brother seemed more concerned to know what it was like under the roads on which we travelled! Rhiannon

Just caught up with this. I love the reference to the 'daily diaspora', and the idea of the house waiting for whoever is coming back. Very haunting
