Temperature drop

An annual cycle of climate change,
see the countryside rearrange
– green receding, life compounds retreat
down underground, or packed into fruit
– the birds have a feast to prepare for the wait,
or the journeys immense of those which migrate,
hedgehogs and bats soon will hibernate
– metabolism lower they slowly drain
fat from their autumn’s rich pickings, maintain
their life in a shelter til time to rise
as the warmth returns to the earth and skies.
Warm woolly jumpers and crackling fires,
– or turn high the thermostat if fashion requires
you keep clothing slight whatever the season
(the saving of fuel inadequate reason
for a favourite trendy style to change,
wear things you feel your friends might think strange)
though out in the cold thick jackets are ‘cool’
and boots can be flaunted when walking to school!

Lovely invocation of autumn,
Lovely invocation of autumn, and also made me smile - I remember having those conversations with my kids: 'No, I'm not turning the heating up, go and put a jumper on. Put two jumpers on. When I was your age...'

Love this Rhiannon, it's got
Love this Rhiannon, it's got that autumn chill, back to school feel. I always feel a bit nervous at this time of year, I think it's a hangover from the stress of returning to the new school year. The fruit and nuts ripened early this year, I hope it doesn't affect the animals storing for winter.

"green receding, life
"green receding, life compounds retreat" reminds me of your tidal poem, the age old flowing of nature from one state to another, and how all creatures have their time and place to thrive, and then "the wait". You have such a wonderful sense of everything fitting together, the rightness and richness of it. And then there's us :0) Did you used to have frost ferns on your windows when you were little? It was magic, though I wouldn't like it now!
