Light beams fall on retina
trigger impulses
transmitted down neurons
flashing into brain,
where signals sent hither
and thither
in all directions
by some of the
trillions of synaptic
connections

– to save memories
or recall,
to touch emotions,
prompt deductions,
or contractions
of muscles
to stretch a hand,
or sit me down,
cause legs to walk,
or facial frown,
or smile,
or talk
with chosen words
for meaningful conversations:

interconnections,
correlations
interrelating,
overriding –

so much in the blink of an eye,
or a flicker of thought.

Quite Radical but appears to be common sense ordinary accepted truth with "our" modern scientific understanding of the brain.

My question just is, "can this be reconciled with religion?" I do not know and I doubt if anyone does.

I don't think I understand in what way it's radical, Nolan. We have some knowledge of the workings of the nerves and brain's organising work. Though the more we do know, the more we realise our limitations in ever being able to fully understand such complexity.

So, on the question of religion, I would say, yes, but not only reconciled, there is no other way that such complexity could have arisen but by a Designer, and never by trial and error of mistakes in DNA replication which would damage, and never have enough co-incident changes to make an improvement of information. PS On reflection, I wondered if your comment was about the connection between the biochemistry of the brain electrical and chemical reactions and our soul's personality. That indeed is a mystery, but God has given us physical bodies.

I like the clippy character of this Rhiannon, it's straight and speedy, to point, like our brains on a good day. It is unfathomable though, isn't it, the complexity of the human brain, it's hard to believe any robot will ever come close.

Thanks, Jane. Oh, no, we are far more than the most complex robot could ever be. Interesting how many research projects there are that are now labelled 'biomimetcs'. When in search for better, faster things they find things in nature that they can copy – a bit. Rhiannon

And it has all grown, from something you need a microscope to see. And there are billions of  humans all of whose brains are unique and will be however many billions more of us are born. No machine could be made like that. You have conveyed the speed of thought so well

Hi, Nolan,
God has given us bodies that can be studied, but we, unlike the animals were made in his image to have communion, fellowship with him, and so we have an eternal soul that is in control of our physical bodies somehow, and will live after that body dies, and be reunited when we are given everlasting bodies. I think that is what God's Word teaches us. Rhiannon
