Conversation of a Tree

And I've been asked if I was

what tree would I be

a willow I think with long eyelashes

or an oak with thick and heavy branches

in the wind the willow might sway

the oak is large and stays

until in age it fails

and crashes down

I would rather be a bird and

when the fearsome sound is heard

take to wing and fly away

then in the storm be carried far

Alight upon some foreign soil

to be identified in some

ornithology table with a note

saying he doesn't belong

as if I never knew

as if I never knew

so perhaps I am a tree

and in the night I dreamed of me
