september makes dark
the sun
has begun to break
rinsed with crystalline rain
its power knows an ebb
the death of summer
feels glorious
as with it, goes
the grunt and scream of amassed children
the piggy-eyed, burnt lobster faces
of short, fat racists
the drunkards
now re-clothed in branded t-shirts
crawl back into their holes
the lowest common denominator –
always a fraction vulgar –
folds back into itself
and after nine months
the seed of hot, holiday
domestic violence
will split open;
exposed and hurt
the traffic
still makes shrill communication
belching and furious
from shore to shore
there is one more bank holiday
to endure, the most abhorrent
and yet, as the foulest of the summer
rages against the dark
change shimmers palpable
a colder atmosphere
graces the window
the magnificence of night
arriving gently earlier
and earlier, each day
that deep, fertile night
cocoons me anew;
returns my life

Enjoyed this very much. Does
Enjoyed this very much. Does violence go up in the Summer? There was a horrific murder here last year when it had been much hotter than usual, and there was a trapped tension in the air like a pot about to boil over. You truly give the sense of longing for it to be cooler

The dark side of summer. I
The dark side of summer. I much prefer the lighter nights, and have to call on my reserves for the long winter ones, but they do have their drawbacks. When I worked in social services we used to dread the week after Bank Holidays, with all the reports of domestic violence and general mayhem. Not as bad as major football matches though!
Brilliant poem. As our summers get hotter, it's only going to get worse.

So many people on ABCTales
So many people on ABCTales celebrating the end of Summer! I'm like airy in as much as I love the short nights and long days, and in my ideal world it would be warm (ish) and sunny all year round - but yes, you've certainly caught the bad bits in this wonderful piece - well deserved cherries and picks!

I can't believe I'm so late to this poem. You've summed up completely how I feel and in such a great poetic way. I especially love those last three lines which I definitely connect with.
Congrats on the well deserved poem of the week. I'm with you all the way.
Jenny.
