Playing with a box …

The children found
a box on the ground,
sealed,
and bound
with tape.
‘What could be inside it?
What could be concealed?’
They wondered,
imagined delights
when they’d plundered
it, opened it up so see.
Some felt when they did so
the fun would have gone though;
they’d rather not see the unknown
yet
– could be just boring when shown.
So they played many games,
and gave it grand names,
but not until tea-time
did they notice the sign
in yellow and black on to its side -
like a three-bladed fan,
so they took it to Mam
for her scissors or knife –
but she shrieked
and she trembled,
and her knees nearly crumpled.
She whispered, ‘Get back,
get the phone,
then she dialled 999
and said, ‘Come!!’
[IP: Here’s a box for you. It’s whatever size you want it to be. Here’s a knife to slice through the tape that’s holding it shut - that’s it - now the rest is up to you...]

HI Rhiannon
HI Rhiannon
Is this based on a true story? How frighening and lucky they took it to their mum. My son found an unexploded bomb buried beside a car park in Guernsey one summer. We called the police and they took it off and blew it up, but it has made a good story for him for many years.
