Small birds flicker thick, make bushes quiver

shimmering silence with bright chirruping.

 

Blackberries, swollen seconds full of sun.

(Try one, to burst sweet on my tongue, now and   

now.)  Clear air, still as if jar safe, light-walls

this afternoon's ripe warm - tempting Summer's

tip before the fall. My bag slow heavies

with joined dots, clotting to a mass of dark.

Year's sentences of weather end in these

soft full stops, some small as  quick breaths, others

huge as the hush come  after promises.

 

In the kitchen, simmer to a purple-

pooled jewel, sugar shot till sticky rich, so

all your lunchtime rolls can taste of home

I do like the noticing of the quivering of the bush full of little birds. And also, the 'now, now' of just one more when sampling! The clotting in the bag broiught back memories too!

And I do admire you for making jam. I've never had a go and have memories of Mum straining them! I just keep freezing the little packets of stewed lushness. Actually my husband bought a little extra freezer as we have guests awhile in what was my in-laws part of the house, and I'd got spoiled by having their little freezer at hand!

Thankyou Rhiannon :0) I think I do it because my Dad had a sweet tooth and loved jam. Mum used to make some most years, but she didn't like me cooking, so when I got my own kitchen, it seemed an important thing to do. I like it because of the link to nature too. And because it is the cooking equivalent of stained glass, which I love. And it is exciting because I never know how it will turn out. I am not a perfectionist, none of my cooking would ever win prizes, it is just fun! But STICKY :0) Making pies and crumbles with frozen fruit is better value as jam is not very expensive to buy. And it is a lovely surpise in the cold grey months to find your pockets of summer in the freezer

Such a juicy poem Di, that sweet taste that leaves me wanting more.

Thankyou Jenny! Yes :0) I boil all the manky ones with some sugar then put it in a sponge cake mixture so it comes out pink with unidentifiable blobs in :0) This is my son's favourite. My partner (with determined wishful thinking) says it is healthy because it has fruit in :0)

Some lovely imagery in this Di - love the bush quivering with small birds - one of the hedges in my garden is like this, and also that final wish

Thankyou Insert. Your garden sounds brilliant :0) There is a bird feeder by the kitchen window and I wondered if the little birds were chirrupping so much because they recognised me (the blackberries are 2 minutes walk away) and were wondering ifI was going to open another restaurant for them

I love 'soft full stops'. The very thought of jam making is so comforting and those brambles provide so much cover for our wildlife, 'small birds flicker', beautiful!

Thankyou very much Jane. Brambles are great :0) One good thing about our council having less money (maybe the only good thing) is not weedkilling this year, or cutting everything back. Everywhere is burgeoning, as if new continents had suddenly appeared. Places that were sterile and boring draw your eye to the changing colours, and insects and birds, it's wonderful :0)
