Abctales is a publisher in full right.
Why would you want to publish (printed page)? You get hundred times more exposure on the web and "it's all free!" Personally I regard Abc as a publisher in full right. Quite seriously and there are many to choose from.
Compared with envelope and postage stamp? Why? It's like insisting on envelope and postage stamp it is nowadays only for junk mail, people wanting to sell you stuff you don't need. Old fashioned it is an illusion although is not always a bad idea, actually it does have it's place eg for hand-written love letters. Pink lipstick and perfume!
The only thing is a printed “hard copy” book is seemingly more durable as more permanent.
To young new eager writers (like me!) it sounds very exciting. Is it self-publishing I've thought about it? How do I go about? How does one get a copy? The usual curiosity. But they say that you should never ever do it no matter how attractive the idea.
Ambition! Nothing wrong. Although I have friends with self-published poetry I would never do it it is self deception. Talking of traditional publication is in order perhaps even just wishful thinking but it doesn't do any harm thinking about it it could be motivation but at risk of disappointment.
You can forget about getting rich by writing poetry it's never been done however many people have managed to make a living out of it.

Abctales is a completely legitimate publisher. Reasoning? We must think in terms of very basic principles. What is write, what is read? Why write, why read? Writing is all about information and recreation, all about records commerce and communication, the reliable exchanging and storing of ideas. All about language.
My brother has been with Abc from the beginning, about twenty years ago, I've been around since 2009. Jacques also has very practical advice and he gave me the idea of these little essays. The main thing is to enjoy it. This website is fantastic. Sometimes unfortunately there is misunderstanding and trouble but not too much and not too often.

Personally I regard Abc as a publisher in full right I don't see why would one want to go "to press, to printed page" so badly. Times change, everything changes especially lately it's just picking up speed.
You without any doubt get much much more exposure on the internet on a suitable writers website than on print. There are many such internet publishers find one that works for you and stick with it. Embrace it is very exciting times.

Generally one should never pay to have anything published except advertisements and this self-publishing is out of the question. However for the web it is clearly different and the business has to be funded most sites ask contributions and subscription fees. Obviously there costs such as admin and other services and staff.
The fact is it is not all free! Different sites cater different markets, interests and tastes, content, readers and writers. Funded by “club fees” usually very reasonable as well as voluntary donations. As far as I know they are very reasonable. Needed for admin and other services the usual other costs the staff is passionate and dedicated their hearts are into it. Do your homework!
For example we have for an Afrikaans writers INK with small annual membership fees. There's nothing wrong with this. I am a member there too but less active. Especially to get initial exposure a foot in the door as such it's definitely worth it publishing this way it is a different story altogether.
The advice is actually more for beginner and amateur writers, persistence and determination!

Tom Brown - I like your take
Tom Brown - I like your take on things, I recently returned to ABC, after a 7yr hiatus, feels good to be home.
So much has changed in the world, and I'm thinking, not all for the better. Getting yourself published these days requires a helluva more effort than it back in the day, but its not impossible.
For me with just over 40 stories, I briefly toyed with the idea of self-publishing, gave it up, and went for coffee...Keith
