Plygain [plug-I-n] songs

Welsh plygain (historically very early Christmas morning carol singing meetings) carols are simple but rich in content, doctrine (covering all that the Babe would do and did), and with intensity of rhyme (between ends of lines, and end to middle of the next, and inside lines) and consonant pattern and richness. I’ve sought to base this on one, but not to strictly translate or copy content, but more give an impression of the type of form, content and ‘musical’ sound.
Wisdom came to the world that morn,
Christ Jesus born, Word precious
– left heaven’s honour, regal reign,
in flesh he came, child righteous.
He’s fully God and fully man,
equipped – so can bring rescue;
He frailty knew, knows how you feel,
now power wields to help you.
What wonder for wretches,
for freedom he fetches
to come and embrace him,
he’ll love and rich grace bring:
Physician whose mission was blessing.
Unpaid, provides healing,
heaven’s pathway revealing,
the entrance unlocking,
his death lets the flock in:
his might with delight we’re confessing.
This is the Man who can forgive
that we may live in kinship,
and through his covenant, shed blood
find peace, his goodness, friendship.
We love his laws, true truth defined,
foul thoughts of mind dissolving,
for he has planted new desires,
our hearts inspires, resolving
the goals we’re pursuing
are pure and enduring
so self is not reigning,
our aim is to serve him,
his Word leads us forward, to glory.
For God truly loves us,
and came down to save us,
a babe like no other,
our Champion and Brother:
we’ll sing, with joy bring you his story.
