 Similar to a Haiku, the lanturne poem uses five lines with a syllable structure of one, two, three, four and one syllables per line.

I didn't know there was anything more minimal than Haiku. This is brilliant.

And the pun on lantern is too

All Japanese poems are syllabic, Di. There are several forms each containing lines with a variable numbers of syllables. The lantern poem with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 1 is the most minimalist after the haiku, I believe.

Hi Drew. I have just come across this form myself. The name 'lantern poem' is derived from the shape.
Unlike the haiku, which has to be preferably about nature, it has no fixed theme.

Very good! Informative too, thanks Luigi! Must say the image of a lantern and the form/shape is brilliant. One gets that right only now and then and even seldom.

You are right about the right shape. It all depends on the length of the lines. I am exploring different types of poetic forms and might return to this in the near future.
