Lake Musings

This was a poem I put on
under the name
Featheredwing
in 2018.
Inspired by a weekend
spent down at lake
fishing.
I often wonder!
How flies Heron
across peaceful
lake?
Majestic grace refined,
pausing only to reflect
as golden rays shimmer
between dancing leaves.
Perched upon
fishing berth
this balmy
summer's day,
enthusiastic anglers crouch
like intrepid toads,
line's taut
primed engaged –
their addiction
fling with carp,
were they
too flighty?
Unlike bird
who stands serene
waiting on
the prize.
Sitting here with creative muse,
verse and rhyme
assured nature's good intentions;
encouraged by her beauty,
but for that murky lake
that ripples
where
fish cluster beneath,
glimmer of hope
believe persistent
fishermen...
so presumed.

I do like a heron. Am part
I do like a heron. Am part way through a grey heron poem myself, but I lost my way with it today. Inspired by people's photos of herons. And yes, I like this, the hope of all fishermen for a catch. Very nice. Rachel :)

I scared a heron on a run
I scared a heron on a run along the river the other day, I hadn't seen it and ran right up to it. Instead of flapping its wings and tearing off in a panic like any other bird would do it just gracefully glided across the river, calm and gracious as anything.

Carping
Carping is (used to be) a big thing in SA too and they get Massive easily 50 pounds but it is purely sport these days they do "catch and release”, ie weigh and take a photo then straight back into the dam. That is probably why they get so huge.
Just one thing, the methods used here are much different than in the UK. You get carp almost everywhere in the world they are very adaptable and can withstand very low temperatures. There are a lot of water birds here duck and geese etc but don't know about herons that much.
Thanks for reminding of the good times Jenny. This is actually a very good poem, professional standard I would say.
