We are in the cinema and you are with probably your dad.
They're showing ET. It's some kind of anniversary
I've always said cinemas should show more old films
they should show the football too
they should show daytime TV and random sitcoms
during the day you should be able to go in and see
whatever they're showing like those educational films
in art galleries and museums. It's quite a good way
to watch things, to wander in and sit on a beanbag
and someone is talking about the great artists of the
Victorian era and then the credits roll
and you wait for it to start again, then stand up
at the exact moment you realise you've already seen this bit
ET was released six months after I was born
and I remember my dad telling me and my sister how much
we were going to enjoy it and the cinema is full
of that exact kind of love
"Let me introduce you to something I cherish."
The voice of ET, the person who says ET phone home
was played by Patricia Welsh, who was uncredited.
She was a chainsmoker which gave the distinct
raspy voice and she died of pneumonia.
She was in Return of the Jedi too. They'll probably show that
at this cinema next time it has some kind of anniversary.

the intensity of shared experience, the threads of people on both sides of the screen. Brilliant
