Sex and the familial god

Exposed

 

Indoors, the narrator frames a pointless chase

 

But the viewer

In its role of voyeur

Learns its place

 

From the armchair

Eliot watches on

 

Meaning is obscured

And everyone’s a hero

the article. It's almost a valid argument. Except that I would argue that what Eliot describes is plagiarism and intertextuality and the acknowledgement of the existence of several degrees between the two. Intertextuality as a concept/term of literary criticism was first coined in 1974.

Worth cherries just for making people think, I should say.

The piece I'm referring to is a brilliant little critical book by T. S. Pearce entitled (surprisingly) T. S. Eliot. One of the Literature in Perspective series (it seems). One of many wonderful bargains from the shelves of York's second-hand bookshops.

An interesting read. Eliot’s maxim seems a little trite. His observation about Hamlet refers to his idea of the objective correlative and, not being an expert on Hamlet, I'm not best placed to comment on whether the action supports the sense of pathos in Hamlet's words or not. Different Pearce, though, I think. I have a feeling mine is long dead.
