A Place Without Rainbows
You look out onto the meadow. It’s surreal almost, the most purely saturated colors assault your senses. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. Crisp and deep greens as far as the eye can see, rolling over small hills and dipping into shallow valleys. The landscape is dotted with pastels, purples, blues, oranges and yellows beckon you to pay closer attention to the flowers amidst the deeper greens of the grass. However, something is not quite...right. The hues are a bit off, These things don’t look exactly like they should.
Something else gnaws at the back of your mind. You can’t place it, but it’s worrisome. Something isn’t exactly good about this situation.
You try to push the worrisome thoughts from your mind as you turn around. A spectacular sight awaits you. The lightest blue ocean set against such a deep blue sky. You remember having read somewhere that the darker and deeper the blue of the sky, the less air pollution is evident. Where did you read that? Why do you care where you read that?
What is your name? Why are you here? You attempt to grasp these logical questions, but they start to fade.
You have no memory of such a lush meadow being this close to the ocean in any place you have ever travelled before. Jungles sure. Meadows...no. Where have you travelled before?
The question is getting drawn away from you. You have been to Thailand, you remember that. But where...
The question’s gone. You forget it.
You concentrate on the ocean again, the almost pure white sand of the beach. Sand doesn’t get that white, does it? That’s not even an off-white.
Shh... Forget the questions.
It is beautiful. The waves come in slowly, almost too slowly. They crash and you can smell the salt air. You feel great. A slight breeze comes in off of the water. It’s audibly perceptible. You feel it caress your cheeks, your bare arms, your... dick? What?
You look down and realize you aren’t wearing any clothes. Your penis, is that your penis? Is that what your penis used to look like? Used to? It’s too big, off color. Weren’t you circumcised? That cock has foreskin. Other than that, it’s almost alien. That’s not mine, is it?
The question starts to pull away, gently, but you don’t let it. Penises are important, aren’t they? It’s odd. Something’s not right.
You step out onto the sand. It feels perfectly warm between your toes and on the soles of your feet. Weren’t you just in a meadow? What did your feet feel like then?
You see the rainbow then. Absolutely magnificent. Why are rainbows significant? You requested a rainbow. What? When did you request a rainbow?
You are confused. You just stand there for a few moments and the confusion starts to dissipate. It falls away like water sliding off of bare skin. However, remnants remain. You like rainbows.
It is stunning. The colors are so bright. Roy G. Biv. The acronym for the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. There are gold and silver in this rainbow, white and black, some turquoise. It’s beautiful, but is it supposed to have that many colors? That many shades? There are like twelve different shades of red.
Shh...yes, it’s a beautiful rainbow. The best rainbow ever. The waves are crashing too slowly to kick up that much moisture into the air to create a rainbow. Yet it still glistens beautifully in the air. Are rainbows supposed to glisten? You feel that you can almost touch it.
You can’t touch rainbows. Yes, you can, see? No...yes. Shh.
Then you see her. She is beautiful. Jessica? The wavy hair, the purple and black striped bikini she used to wear before... Who is Jessica? You hadn’t noticed her until now, walking up on your right along the perfect beach.
Jessica is your wife. Who are you? Jessica shouldn’t be here. That is definitely wrong. Why? The questions are being dragged away, but you refuse to let them, until they are forcefully ripped away.
That’s her hair, a perfect semblance of her hair. Yet...her breasts are too big, her hips too small. Jessica’s dead.
Jessica is dead! No, shush, shh, Jessica is fine. She’s right here. That’s not Jessica. That can’t be.
Something is not right. Jessica?
“Hey, baby,” she says. That is not Jessica’s voice. That’s not even close. It almost sounds...inhuman.
“Sorry sir, we are having some technical issues.” The voice is loud, thunderous, painful.
You shouldn’t be able to hear? Why? The accident What accident? No accident, don’t worry. Nothing. Shh.
“We’re going to have to pull you out.” The voice is horrible and cruel.
“No, I don’t want to go. Please no. Who are you? Who am I?” You can’t talk.
The accident. You lost pieces of you. No. What accident? The accident, You lost your dick. You lost your lower jaw. You lost your sight and hearing. No. You lost Jessica. Shh.
“Too many problems with the programming. Too many glitches. We’ll have to try again later. Sorry, sir.”
You don’t want to leave. “No!” Sensors are being removed from your body.
You take one last look at Jessica, her face contorts, gets pixelated. Unreal.
You look at the rainbow again as the probes are removed from your brain. You remember now.
You’re going back to darkness and pain, to a place without Jessica and without white, sandy beaches or picturesque meadows.
Back to the eternal dark, to a place without rainbows.
