A Milestone

Fifty-five years
of wedded bliss
is not something
we can dismiss
as a trivial occasion.
It is a milestone
that a couple, normally,
don't celebrate alone.
 
They would invite
friends and relations
to join them
in the celebrations.
They'd congregate
with their retinue
in a posh restaurant,
or another venue.
 
There would be plenty
of eating and drinking
but with fewer calories
for those who are slimming.
Lively music a certainty
and with it dances,
with young lovers
exchanging glances.
 
But in these days
of test and trace,
we must soldier on
and show a brave face.
We have to put up
and dancing and singing
are nothing more
than wishful thinking.
 
We are adaptable
and must be resigned
to the inconvenience
of being confined.
No celebrations
for Darby and Joan,
just a glass of wine
and a juicy T-Bone.

Congragulations! Still a lovely encouragement to those 'young lovers' of the meaning of committment! We celebrated 50 years last summer, similarly without much gathering (and I wasn't too well), but still the best wishes. Rhiannon

Thank you, JoAnne. I would have to reach the age of141 to repeat the feat. It may be a leap too far but I'll see what I can do. smiley

Hi Luigi. I didn't know there was a way of contacting writers on ABC other through commenting on a post. I can't see where any personal messages are picked up.

Hi Paul. When I look up a user's page there are three boxes, VIEW, TRACK and CONTACT. The last one enables anybody to send messages.. Maybe I didn't send it properly or it is malfunctioning. I shall try again and also copy myself to see if it works.

Hi Luigi. When I look at the options on my profile page, there is no "contact" tab. If messages are meant to be triggered and sent to my registered email address then that hasn't happened either as I am up to date on email and just checked again. I have edited my comment on here to congratulate you on your poem as well.

It is very confusing, Paul, especially for newcomers. The user can only contact members other than himself/herself so the contact box will not show on their profile page. Please look up my page and you'll see that contact link. Try using it, ticking the box 'Send yourself a copy', and let's test if it still works (it used to in the past).

Ah yes.. I see the "contact" tab on your profile. I have sent a test message and copied myself in. The boxes required are username and email address. It must take one hell-of-lot of saintly patience. Both sides. Is the poem about you Luigi I thought you were a bit younger? And do we celebrate? A virtual party that won't do. You will have to wait for sixty.

It is just a question of give and take on both sides, Nolan. Yes, the poem is autobiographical and I am indeed 86 years-old. I hope the lockdown is lifted before I'm sixty so I can have a proper party.
