NOT THIS TOWN
The Sheriff likes to say that he don’t trust us when we’re out of his sight.
I guess that’s why he visits with my Mama in the middle of the night.
He creeps out just ‘for morning, checks to see that everything alright.
My mom says not to worry ‘cos he only does it when he’s good and tight.
I was born behind the bait shop spent all my childhood moving round and round
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
But this is not that town
Sunday morning, preacher talks of evil and what it can do.
Looks in our direction to give the good townsfolk some kind of clue
On Friday night he visits, always “friendly”, just “passing through”.
Some Saturday mornings he's still here, my mama doesn't know what she can do.
I was born behind the bait shop spent all my childhood moving round and round
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
But this is not that town
People say this town is kind
They see what happens, pay no mind.
I long to leave this all behind
And head off on my own.
The local kids are not too bad, the rich kids are the worst I have to say.
The poor kids know just how we feel and live their lives in much the same way.
It's the preacher or the sheriff or a tradesman come to settle out a bill.
I hope to God it changes soon, but I fear it never will
I was born behind the bait shop spent all my childhood moving round and round
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
But this is not that town
I was born behind the bait shop spent all my childhood moving round and round
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
But this is not that town
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
But this is not that town
One day I’ll find a place to settle down
Gonna burn the whole place down.
