To Be or Not to Be (an optimist)

Every time we see the old year out,
we categorically say that this time
it will be better without any doubt
than the twelve months just gone.
We must admit hope was boosted
not only once or twice, but thrice
although, as the economy suffered,
people will have to pay the price.
Exchanging good wishes we'll show
our optimism and shame the cynic
who grumbles that in two years
he's been unable to attend a clinic
or to talk to his doctor face to face,
except by phone, not even via zoom.
To have an appropriate consultation
there doesn't seem to be any room.
He tells everyone that his frustration
will escalate into a considerable ire
that can give rise to a wild outburst
better expressed in a scathing satire,
Nevertheless, stoically, we'll get on
with our life with greater resolution
knowing that in the end compromise
might still provide the best solution.
So raise a glass and greet the start
of an unknown but challenging year
let's leave behind toil and trouble,
and rid ourselves of irrational fear.

I agree with your last stanza
I agree with your last stanza Luigi. Even though I know what you mean about trying to see a doctor, I think you've got more chance of going to the moon...very frustrating, especially when it's scary enough having to cope with some fears of underlying illness.
Your sentiments are I'm sure shared by many.

I like this poem and how it
I like this poem and how it marries optimism with the regressive effects of the pandemic and decline of our health and social systems. You express the mixed feelings of entering the new year at this time! Happy New Year nonetheless!

An astute, perfect summary.
An astute, perfect summary. There's a lot to be said for stoicism. Happy New Year to you, Luigi. Paul

Luigi, you put your point
Luigi, you put your point across so elegantly. I hope next year for you is much better in every respect, though I do enjoy reading your "scathing satire" very much!
