Duvet!

It should be so straightforward
to put a duvet in its case,
but when I rush – no time to waste,
I soon regret presumptive haste
and find the corners out of place –
a twist, a hump,
an odd-shaped lump,
and have to dive inside to
find the edge, untangle
and take more time to guide and grip
careful not the strategies to bungle,
until its safely threaded.
evenly embedded –
a final shake til flat
so that
it's smooth, to soothe,
wrap round each one
who seeks its warmth when day is done.

I find it takes less time to write a poem about putting a duvet in its case than it actually does to put the duvet in its case. There should be machines to do this for us. I'm surprised there aren't poor children in south east Asian sweatshops doing this for a dollar a day, though I suppose there s some limit to the things that even the cruellest factory owner would force upon his employees.

It really made me smile as the rhyme and rhythm kept the story going along.

Thank you! I saw a little video showing a 'neat way' recently, but I'm not sure I got the crunch step and haven't tried it. Our present one is very large, and since my op, I've needed help to shake it out!. Sometimes I peg the corners in, but still often get in a tangle, through haste.

My daughter took some 10/11 year olds to France one year and was very annoyed that many or most couldn't put their own duvet covers on, and the next year in the letter about it, insisted that the children had to be taught how to do it at home before they came! Rhiannon

I quite like putting duvet covers on, but I have a feeling my standards might be a bit lower than yours

Thank you! I think I haven't had to do it so often recently and have got out of the way of doing it. But it is nice when it is finished. Last Friday I had a struggle, and all week it's been nagging to try to write something for the IP about it! Rhiannon

A great read Rhiannon, reminding me of my chamber maid days, working at the Holiday Inn in Bristol. We had to change about fifteen to twenty five beds a day, I think I became an expert by the time I left that job.

Your poem definitely took me back to the 1970s.

As one who is always asked to assist, and never managed it properly, I can understand the frustration.
This week's I.P. seems to have increased your inspiration, Rhiannon, but I have failed to rise to the occasion this time. I thoroughly enjoyed this version; well done.
