this meeting of trees and rushes 

glows, peaceful as a holy place

 

warbler songs shimmer warm blue air 

where speckled wood butterflies dance

from spine-fuzzed branches. Yellow blooms

burst, Winter's spangling sparks of faith

fulfilled unfurl sunflares haloed

with scent - coconut/pineapple/

vanilla, as if on bright Spring days

light transmutes, becomes happiness

 

Ulex Europaeus, or Whin 

as it's called here, cannot be killed

by fire, nor cutting, but resists

grows stronger, thrives - glorious, Free

Hullo :0) I am trying to think of something sensible to say about your latest pieces of writing, as don't want to just keep repeating myself with Raw, Powerful, Intense.

 You have started me reading DH Lawrence which I found on project Guttenburg. It is not at all as I had been told. Though it is humbling how he can write so well about women - I cannot put myself in anyone else's mind at all. And just casually make such incandescent poetry  in between. I feel sandpapered and have only just started.

The seeds of this plant are like ammunition :0) When it's very hot and dry in summer, the pods (it is related to peas, I think, though very prickly) crackle as they burst open, shooting out little round black seeds. There really are flowers all year round, but in strong sunshine they smell gorgeous, sort of like if light was fermenting

They are! Though you must have wonderful flowers too, where you are? Did you try growing some wildflowers round where you stay?

Hm, I looked up gardening zones, and where I am is the same colour as yours, because we don't get much frost, either. But you get way hotter Summers! So all the things I can't get to grow because my garden is too shadey and wet, you should find easy? Like Coneflowers? I WISH I could grow them, they have such gorgeous warm colours :0) If graves grow flowers that living creatures can use, that makes them links, between lives, do you think? Please don't give up on your patch of outdoors - although seed packets say their wildflowers are easy, often it is a bit complicated as though tough once started, wildflowers can be really really pernicketty about germinating. I  have given up on lots of kinds of seeds as I'm just not a good enough gardener, but there are wildflower nurseries in America, like here, where you can buy plants? So long as you water them the first week, they should be ok? Though not wild,  I bet you could grow nasturtium seeds!!! Maybe you call them tropaeolum majus? They are related to water cress and the leaves can be eaten in salads, too as they are peppery. You can get climbing ones that go really tall if they're happy, like 3 metres, with their bright orange and yellow flowers and cool round leaves

This is such a gorgeous nature poem Di. Those first two lines really set the scene, I can't think how I missed it. Please write more like this.

This is beautiful Di. The bright yellow against a blue sky is a wonderful tribute. The way you've described the scent of gorse brought back memories for me, of being in Wales near a beach when my children were small and we couldn't get over how strong and gorgeous the smell. I didn't know it was called Whin so that's something I've learned. I think it's known as Western Gorse because it is more widespread in the West of the UK.

And I'd missed this too! Lovely to draw attention to the sparkling gorse flowers, that brighten up the surroundings all year round but when out more fully are such a delight, and the beautiful smell as you say! (Cornflowers seem to spread wildly around part of our garden!)

Thankyou so much for your lovely comment Rhiannon, and the link. I have always in my mind your descriptions of gorse flowers and hope very much I don't steal anything! Am SO JEALOUS about your cornflowers as I keep sowing them but it does say they like sun, and perhaps there is not enough even in the flowerbed by the road where flowers come out a month or so later than I see the same ones in other people's gardens, but it must be so amazingly pretty to have the intense blue of cornflowers with gorse rich yellow? PLEASE write a poem and post a photo when they come out :0)
