[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]

He is, and was, and is to come,
the First and Last, the Living One,
was dead, alive now evermore
and holds the keys of death’s hard door.

John, at His awesome presence shook,
His voice, was like a rushing brook,
His face as brilliant as the sun,
his words cut through all lies and sham.

And by His blood  we’re fully freed

As priests we can come near, and be

My dog tags are embossed with NO REL PREF.  Religion ain't the same as faith.  Always admired the chaplains - sky pilots - who were religiously faithful.  Much obliged for the read.

Thanks for the comment. Interesting. 'Religion'  as you say, isn't the same as 'faith'. It seems to be about rules, and man-made ideas and ceremonies. 'Faith'  needs to be in the truth, and we only know what is true and 'good news' by reading what the Maker says, and what the Son did and said while here. Then trusting He did all that was needed on the cross and can be wuth us to  help us trust and cope. Rhiannon

Soldier: If I'm killed, when I'm standing before God in Heaven, how do I reconcile killing people with doing my duty all in the name of God and country?

Last question first — we can say we are going to heaven if we've accepted Christ as our personal Saviour.

First question — the powers that be have to soberly judge both when to use the death penalty, and when to go to war, and those who serve under them have to obey orders by their superiors. These matters aren't the same as personal murder.

Sorry to intrude on your debate with TWJ but your last post to him totally confused me. Unless I am mistaken, by saying that it's up to the powers that be to judge WHEN to use the death penalty you seem to imply that such punishment is acceptable and the same argument can be applied to going to war. If Putin, for instance, after (his own) considerate judgment decided that it was necessary to go to war with Ukraine, do we agree with his action? After all, he is a so-called 'power that be'. As for soldiers having to obey their superiors, I recall the Nazis at the Nuremberg tribunal claiming they were obeying orders.
Something to chew over, I think.

These are difficult matters, Luigi, but firstly there is place for capital punishment for clear callous murder.

Secondly, Putin will have to face God with his use of his position in going to war over Ukraine with lies and malice. Those under him, may be held responsible if they clearly see his actions are wrong, though that would mean either being punished by him, or surrendering I suppose, but I think TWJ was thinking of ordinary service of soldiers serving in action for a government they basically respect, but having to kill in the course of obeying battle orders, but not out of personal malice. Thank you, glad you like the hymn, Ray.

But I'm not sure what you mean about John being  the Word. In the gospel in the Bible that was written by John, Jesus' disciple, which is quoted a lot at Christmas Carol serices, it says that 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' (first verse of the book). So John was calling Jesus the Word of God because he came to make him known (ie yes, the Greatest Prophet of God), but He is and was God himself in that mysterious trinity.(ie God being one God, but three persons, Father, Son - Jesus-, and Holy Spirit) I know it's hard to understand, but we couldn't expect to understand a true supernatural God who made all material things, could we?!

A few verses later on (v14) it says that 'The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.' Rhiannon
