Cooler days
dimmer light
sap retracted,
out of sight;
recall
of food from leaves
(flesh shrunk –
leaf stems sealed
leaves wither, dehydrated
skeletons fall
leaf scar on twig)
– now life and moisture safely filling
buds and berries,
roots and trunk,
underground
tubers, corms and seeds
in warmer earth
encapsulated
enclosed
awaiting spring,
when warmth brings growth
chemical activity, rebirth
shoots and roots poke out    
buds swell and sprout
delicate life again flourishing
by food stored then, now nourishing
to once again make living flesh
from light and air;
– and we will share!
