Pick A City

Pick a city,
compare yourselves.
You could be as rotten
as the Big Apple.
As eternal as Rome – or –
as confusing as Byzantium –
you’ve had as many names.
As me.
You could be London,
who would know?
Or perhaps Paris, valuing
yourself as better
than the rest, the 3rd line
of a ‘this book belongs to’
whose last is ‘The Universe'.
Of course.
You could be Berlin:
Lang’s Metropolis,
not Christiane F’s beat,
but drink enough and you
could join her in Amsterdam,
among the canals and bicycles,
living life, post-infamy.
At home.

A clever, thoughtful poem
A clever, thoughtful poem that made me think. I *still* haven't seen Fritz Lang's movie "Metropolis". I really should. I haven't been to Amsterdam either. I have been "home", though. Which could be just about anywhere if it's thought of as a metaphor.

You sent me down a Christiane F rabbit hole after reading this. Poor woman. They made another version of that film recently apparently.

I like this idea. It would make a good Inspiration Point perhaps? For myself I would have to think more first.
