Your verdict on the empty tomb

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
An empty tomb. The soldiers bribed
to say they slept,
their guard not kept.
Discouraged followers transformed.
For they were thrilled when finding He
had left the grave,
alive to save.
He said to wait for power to go.
His Spirit then would strengthen them
their great desire,
compulsion, fire,
this glorious news to share with all.
They’d been entrusted to convey
God’s pardon offer,
though they will suffer
from those who wanted this suppressed.
And facing death, they could not lie.
Why do some bite
when with delight
they’re offered love, fulfilment, peace?
Such odd beliefs invented now:
far stranger than
that God as man
came here and powerful kindness brought!
Tune: 888 iambic eg St Aidan by F R Grey arr John B Dykes, tune of ‘Why should I fear the darkest hour’ by John Newton

where you there?
There's a beautiful country song something like,
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb,
and “Were you there when the stone was rolled away?”
