A Posture of Indifference

Once the deer used
to decorate
this crop of hills
many small ones at that
along our journey’s
grassy path
tallying up the ones
we saw – today
better than
our last numbers.

Deer are such shy and nervous
Deer are such shy and nervous beautiful creatures, you are lucky to see them. Here in England when we walk in the forest there are supposed to be loads, but we never see them, mind you I don't blame them hiding from humans, we're pretty scary and some people can be dangerous.

I once went to the Isle of
I once went to the Isle of Jura where it is believed that the red deer population outnumbers the human population on a ratio of thirty to one.
And George Orwell lived there for a while. He wrote 1984 while he was there.
Two facts that made me wonder if it was safe to visit the island and would I go home with my marbles intact.
To see all those dear deer in the wild was a fabulous experience. I think they'd do a much better job of being the dominant species than humans ever could.

Sadly
Sadly Richard, on the plains of America there were also thousands and thousaands of Bison, here in South Africa we had herds many many thousands of Springbuck on the highveld, basically wiped out long ago. At least the migrating Wildebeest are still in such numbers.
It's just your poem's title it doesn't make much sense to me.
All the best! Tom
