A Girl of Eastern Beauty

A girl of eastern beauty at a table by the door
An acrobatic Persian performs his tricks across the floor
A uniformed old soldier tired and bloodied from a war
Looks around remembering he’s deserted a foreign corps
Extravagant concoctions of liquors, exotic fruits
And flesh prepared with flavours of the Great Seljuk spice route
A dozen painted courtesans transported from Beirut
While a charming man enchants a snake with a tune from his magic flute
Gazing ‘cross the parlour, scything dense tobacco smoke
The room entombs with plumes of fumes, exhaust from toxic toke
I watched the girl in silence, not a single word she spoke
Then tremors quaking in my heart as a sultry smile she broke
A signal through the murkiness, a message to invite
To join her in her alcove, for us to dance away the night
And when the club was closing I would grasp her hand so tight
To stay with her in paradise ‘til the break of the morning light

Intriguing concoction of
Intriguing concoction of rhythm and rhyme! And a picture of the subtle workings of 'enticement' more than 'anticipation' I thought, and sad dead-ends of exotic sweet-smells and 'charming' music. Rhiannon

This was so evocative of the
This was so evocative of the far east I imagine Turlough. it bought back memories of a club I went to back in the early 1990s where an exotic dancer writhered around on the laps of men, before doing her belly dance and shaking all the tiny bells she wore, the dancer made it look so easy, but take my word for it, exotic dancing is really hard to master, and achieve with perfection.
It sounds like the anticipated night was an occasion never to be forgotton. I loved the story behind this poem, it was so sensual and alluring.
Great read Turlough.

Hi again Turlough,
Hi again Turlough,
I'm afraid there's not much to write about as far as me doing exotic dancing. My attempt at belly dancing classes never really took off, it was far too taxing on the body, and I just couldn't master the art I'm afraid, but at least I had a go.
Thank you for the interest anyway.
Jenny.
