Hillsborough

Be damned your Maxwell and Murdochs
Poodle politicians and Tory scum
On a private-public leash
Hauled o’er the Lepping Lane
The smashed road of David Duckenfield’s lies
With no space for tired eyes
That can no longer weep.
Be damned your Maxwell and Murdochs
Who refuse the miraculous
Shoeless bodies in flight
Human hair bright as barley
Trod into the ground
Their faces have never been clearer
An un-childed look
Dissolved into a roar
What’s the score?
Be damned your Maxwell and Murdochs
Despair, exhaustion and thunderous panic
Swallowed by the big beasts of denial
Carried to their common fate
Mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers
Compassion of the Kop
Your voice finds a place in our hearts
In your barefoot home
You’ll never walk alone.

Horror and mistrust.
The causative inept police force, the horror of the event and a government intent on a cover up. It all stinks.
I've read a lot about this. In previous semi-finals at Hillsborough fans from Tottenham and Leeds had felt that they were going to be crushed to death in the Leppings Lane stand. Miraculously they weren't but it remained a disaster left waiting to happen. Nobody listened to their complaints.
The psycological effects on the disaster on the Forest fans who looked on from the other end of the stadium weren't considered until very recently.
But the effect on most people that I know in Britain, who were nowhere near Sheffield when this took place, is that they can never trust the police or the media.

Wow - had to check and the Hillsborough disaster dates back to 1989. I have crossed countless Scousers who tell me that The Sun is effectively black-listed in Liverpool and nobody but nobody buys the newspaper even today because of the way this was reported. These were difficult times for footie and at least all-seater stadiums came from it which, IMHO, are a big improvement on standing. I came close to being crushed to death against metal barriers a few times on the Holte End as a kid following crowd surges. Surprised that there's a movement to bring back standing areas..
