[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series]
See, we have received Messiah –
never was there such a Friend.
Moses and the prophets taught us
of the One that God would send.
He alone, God the Son,
Saviour for mankind has come.
He’s the Lamb went to the slaughter
willingly to take our place.
Paying all our debt, He cancelled
records of our guilt, by grace.
Through His blood, we are freed,
everlasting peace decreed.
Here’s a Friend deserves devotion,
fullest love, and highest praise.
Purchase of our life, and cleansing
by his blood thrill and amaze.
Voices raise all our days,
thankful, filled with joy always. Tune: metre: 87 87 337
[The week before last it was suggested in the Inspiration Point for the week we write something based on a poem we enjoyed, using the same format. This is a ‘sort-of’ translation of a Welsh hymn/carol that is very rich and has been sung and appreciated for long ages. [ ‘Wele, cawsom y Meseia’ by Dafydd Jones 1711-1777] An exact translation, or as exact as one could be, would have to be prose, and would not necessarily capture the impact and effect of the original author’s use of particular phrases and poetic forms. So this is an attempt to bring out the teaching contained in the hymn as close as I can while using a similar metre and rhyme scheme, and aiming for the impact the teaching should convey. (The original hymn had more verses, but I’ve worked on the three commonly sung)]
