The Heavy Heart

Heavy is the heart, that leaves the soul,
Full of truth and lies.
‘Which is which?’ she wants to know,
Sitting by her side.
She begged and begged, and begged some more,
Before her mom’s last breath,
‘Please tell me who’s my dad!’
She wipes her eyes, and wept!
Is he the one that looks like them?
She points to six siblings,
The seventh one, there was no doubt,
Same nose and other things.
She recalls being ripped from home,
Becoming a foster child.
Her only saving grace her bro,
staying by her side.
Coming to terms with a new habitat,
Her words they were selective,
She was young but still old enough,
To feel so defective.
She clammed up and kept,
To herself most of the time,
Her brother kept her spirits up,
Her one true lifeline.
Thicker than water is blood,
Then he had to leave,
An adolescent, her body changing,
A life with no reprieve!
Not knowing what to do with herself,
She paced up and down,
Never feeling accepted fully,
Wearing a constant frown.
Then to hear, at a brothers reception,
By her so-called niece,
That she was also her sister,
The pacing of her heart increased!
Her world imploding!
Her mind exploding!
At the thought of 3 dads;
Dad one; the original,
father to the others
dad two; the fosterer
loves her like his own
now dad 3; the one she’s never met
begging mom for answers!
Seven on each side enough
Now her niece and nephew,
‘How many others?’ she asks mom,
Let me down again…you!
The confusion brings tears,
The unimaginable truth she questions,
Begging for answers she sits,
Begging for confessions.
Her mother takes her final breath,
Eternally never answering,
Heavy the question, heavy her heart,
She cries, forever searching.
