‘Why is Mummy so busy?
Why doesn’t she seem to hear me
when I speak?
Why are there piles of food
in the kitchen
and clothes on the chair,
and bags and cases everywhere?
Why has her face got a puzzled frown,
and she keeps writing things down?’

“Come on, bedtime quickly!
We’re going on holiday tomorrow!”

One would hope for more enthusiasm! But maybe he really doesn't know what a holiday is? Well he will find out soon enough!

Thank you. It was an interesting IP, but I suddenly enjoyed thinking of the puzzlement and unsettledness for children when routine seems to have gone wrong! Rhiannon

"… What’s a “holiday”?’"

Oof...that's a powerful last line leaving all kinds of issues in the reader's mind. Of course, we often take holidays for granted but many don't get them for lots of reasons. Maybe it's the child's first holiday.

Thanks. Actually. my two little youngest grandchildren (7 and 5) had often been to visit their grandmother in London, and on a housparty, but couldn't remember going on a 'self-catering' holiday where they would be by a beach, and when it happened, the word 'holiday' did mean something quite new and exciting!

But there comes a time with all children when very young to first experience the word, the actuality, and the harassed preparations which must be a bit bewildering - and they can't be told too much or they start nagging, 'When are we going?'! Rhiannon
