Prospecting

Something glimmers.
Nails scraped ragged
I land, crank up
the rusted mechanism
and start my parched work.
I heave up your blank slabs
blaring searchlights on the woodlice
and eager black beetles beneath
as they scarper for darker corners.
I can offer no cool dirt
no damp and heavy loam;
do I cast a shadow? If so
you find it too thin
for such tender solace.
My fingers scrabble.
The sun desiccates.
Is this what you want?
Is this?

is this gold?
"Is this what you want? Is this?" With respect, good question!
Gold was made for going to for dreams of coming from, which with any luck will never come true.

I liked this very much, feel
I liked this very much, feel cruel when lifting something in the garden, turn the woodlice world upside down, had never thought of it being like being forced to confront the endless sky. How lies can be more understandable, more comforting than truth

Stuck with me
I have come back to this piece a number of times now. It's intriguing. I love the idea of the shadow being too thin and the question at the end. I imagine it being read by Peggy Lee in her song "Is that all there is?".
