They Seem To Be Alive (re-write)
By Ed Crane

Beasts of burden stand patient
murmering from internal functions.
Body heat warming passing admirers.
‘Of course they’re alive,’ engineers
and firemen declare.
Coming to life every morning with
each gallon and shovel of coal.
‘They have moods,’ they claim.
Stubborn, good, contrary.
Exhaling moist clouds so dense
they are lost inside,
the giant mechanical dinosaurs,
haul themselves to action.
Never seeming eager to go accepting
their fate heaving vast breaths of
sulphurous smoke and pure white steam.
Now, petted and adored.
Rare breeds. Endangered species
cared for by men in uniform grime
coated boiler suits with faces stained
terracotta by coal embedded skin.
So proud of their charges
like a wayward child – or lover.
And of those who come to ride
on the spectacle of steam.
The very young; bemused and scared
by clanging wheels and vaporous shrieks.
Fathers reminiscing days they hardly knew
while grandpa sits quietly in the carriage
dreaming of courting days.
Contradictory sounds of old and new.
Ten-year-old’s gamers mark time
with Victorian rhythmic tracks

trains from Victorian times,
trains from Victorian times, Victorian lines criss-crossing the world. They still rule in some continents. The dinosaurs may return?

These Victorian trains live
These Victorian trains live on in my heart, they just can't be beaten. Whenever I've had the chance to travel on one, I become like an excited child again. Visiting the train museum up in Yorkshire back in the 1980s was such a pleasure.
I can understand why some people are so passionate about them. Your poem is a tribute to these huge trains that capture a past I so love.

Ah! I remember waiting for my train once and I couldn't understand why the station was crammed full of people with huge cameras (mainly men!). It turned out they were waiting for a visit from a steam train - the excitement when it arrived! There is something rather lovely about all the noise, isn't there?

What a fantastic experience!
What a fantastic experience! Steam engines are the strongest engines just very low on efficiency, wasteful on energy.
The kids would be busy playing games on their cellphones.
