Road to Nowhere

Translucent,
Enraptured
Son of steel.
Milled in slanted fire
And fractured air.
Lost beneath the deserts of night
Before the first dawn,
The first death.
Lost behind the mountains,
Behind the forests,
Behind the walls
That hide you from the world.
I stood on the road to nowhere
And watched you pass.
Watched you race along,
Dripping time,
Losing yourself in the pointless chase.
I stood on the road,
And let the sun wash through me.
I crawled through the forests
Under the glare of your god.
I crawled through the deserts,
Alone.
The whistle of chromium steel,
The stench of burnt oil,
And the roar of the tiger
In those forests of the night.
Now,
My bones are buried in fine grey dust
At the base of the barren mountain.
All that once was, once lived,
Is gone.
All that once loved,
Forgotten.
And with the dusk
a gentle humming, familiar voices signing
the lullaby of the dead.
