ALL IN A ROOM
PEELING PAPER, ON THE WALL,
THREADBARE CARPET, ALONG THE HALL.
IN THE CORNER, A BROKEN LAMP,
NO MONEY FOR HEATING, RISING DAMP.
PAPERS BUILDING UP, ON A CHAIR,
LOOKS IN THE MIRROR, THINNING HAIR.
TUCKED ON THE MANTLE, A MOUNTAIN OF MAIL,
HOME OF SOME ONE SINGLE, BENT AND FRAIL?
SILENCE IS SHATTERED, BY A DRIPPING TAP,
HOW CAN THEY GET OUT, OF THIS ETERNAL TRAP?
PANS ON COOKER, BURNT AND SOAKING,
SMELL AND STENCH, ALMOST CHOKING.
FLIES HOVER THIS WAY, AND THEN THAT?
CAT EATING FOOD SPILT ON THE MAT.
BINS OVER SPILLING, LITTER ON FLOOR,
LADY OF THE HOUSE, PICKS IT UP NO MORE.
DUSTY, UNKEPT, DIRTY, UNCLEAN,
DOES THIS BELONG TO A MAN OLD AND MEAN?
NO! BUT A WOMAN, ESSENTRIC, NOT MAD,
A LOVER ONCE, RAN OFF WITH ALL THAT SHE HAD.
