So I Talked To The Moon Instead

So I talked to the moon
Instead of you
Because that's all I have left
There was something about its yellow light
Over the midnight sea that made me feel
This is as close as I will ever
get back to you
Arms wrapped around cold knees
Against the wind
I remembered that night you sang off key
You were lovely
And I loved you
Despite my better judgement
Someone said you don't choose your friends
And I know I didn't choose you
But you were there for six long years
Calling me at four AM
To hear me complain about someone lame
Taking me for a drive, buying me watermelon juice
Laughing
I wanted us to grow up together
Your kids to play with mine
A bunch of sissy boys
Just like their dad
I would love to taunt you
I would love to talk to you again
Instead
I talk to the moon
And say I'm sorry
For all the times I never called you back
And the fact that I never listened
When you really needed me
But I don't know if you ever needed
Because you had the smile
Of a content man with a full belly
And hands that gave and gave
And never asked for more
Friendships are so much better
When they come unexpected
And now that I grow older
Without you
I have begun to forget
Your off-key voice
Your face has faded
Like the light of that yellow moon
Over the midnight sea
That I talk to instead of you
Because that's all I have left of you
