A message on my answerphone,
from a voice I've never heard,
has left me full of yearning
as I hang on every word.
For my messages are usually,
in truth, a bit mundane;
'back at six' or 'phone the bank'
or 'it's about your drain.'
Not 'Hi, it's me, why aren't you
planting kisses on my neck?
oh when can I meet up with you?
oh God, I'm such a wreck!
I need to hear your voice again,
please call me back, you creep!
Sorry, didn't mean that,
love you, miss you, want you.' Beep.
I play it back, and then again
like some old favourite song.
And I wonder if she's realised
she got the number wrong.
