Choices

Sometimes it’s hard to make a choice. Sometimes we’d prefer not to.
Imagine – for the sake of argument – you have two cars.
One, perhaps, you’ve had for a long, long time; might even be your first ever car. It’s a boring, production line thing. It starts every time, first time. It’s a no-maintenance vehicle.
In your anthropomorphic way you project onto it; when the engine starts it doesn’t sound thrilled at the prospect of you at the wheel. And let’s face it, where do you take it? Work, shopping, school? But you have a certain affection for it, call it sentiment. It doesn’t make your pulse race though, does it?
Picture the other. It might be a sports car, might be a classic; could be older than your other car. It could be foreign. There will be something exotic about it. It will be striking.
Every time you look at it, you’ll feel good. It is, of course, high-maintenance, maybe a little temperamental. That’s the flip-side of passion isn’t it? And that’s what you hear coming from under the hood, when you turn over the engine.
Thing is, you probably can’t cope with both cars. Oh, you might for a while… but you know one or the other will break down and it won’t be convenient.
So what do you do?
It’s simple, you say. Just list the pros and cons of each on a piece of paper and you make your choice.
And you’re right, it would be simple – if we really were talking about cars.
